* Tenpins & More league bowlers have done well in recent outings out-of-state, at other Bowling Centers and on their home lanes. Firstly, Adrienne Miller won the PBA West Region Non-Champions event in Las Vegas, NV. She averaged 226.7 to win 5-0 for $1,500 top prize but more importantly, a berth in to next year's Tournament of Champions.
Along the way, Miller, one of few women in the large field, eliminated Jason Tehee of California, Keith Dommer of Arizona and Miguel Rosales of California. Matt Helmick, going to college at Wichita State, came home for Thanksgiving and won the Junior Bowlers Tour at Leisure Bowl in Albuquerque. He qualified with 1,117 then beat Janeyl Carper 2-1, Roger Johnson 2-0, Jacob Wright 236-205 and Rio Rancho's Paul Carper 212-202 in an exciting final. Helmick averaged 221.5 for 12 games in the event that had five local bowlers finish in the top eight.
At home, Dana Miller-Mackie set a new house record during back-to-back leagues there Monday night. Her 1,551 over six games beat the previous mark of 1,500 by UNM Bowling coach, Joey Faulkner created earlier this season. Miller-Mackie shot 258-279-256 (793) in the Senior Trios then backed it up with 278-245-235 (758) in the following Scratch Doubles league. Speaking of leagues, eleven are coming up for new short-seasons in December and January.
* High school bowling continues to grow across the US, showing a 2.5% increase over prior year, according to statistics from the National Federation of State High School Associations. It marked the tenth straight year of growth for the sport at high school level.
At the two most recent local events, there were 44 teams at Tenpins & More and 48 teams at Holiday Bowl. Tenpins & More will again host the 2010-2011 State Championships in February as part of an arrangement between the NMAA and the Rio Rancho Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
* Roll-offs continue through Sunday in the 10th annual New Mexico Games Bowling competition at Tenpins & More. The top three place-getters in each of 15 divisions get the chance to represent New Mexico in the National State Games of America finals the first weekend of August, 2011 in San Diego, CA.
