People find varied ways to say grace

Sharing HIStory, Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow. That was the theme of the 2010 Northwest Texas Centennial Annual Conference. There was a lot to celebrate in three short days.

Just a few weeks ago, the world celebrated the miracle rescue of 33 miners trapped underground in a mine in Chile for 69 days. More than a billion people around the world sat glued to the TV reports of that rescue. While you may have seen and heard this story, there are some things you may not have heard. When the miners were brought up one-at-a-time in that special rescue capsule, they came up all wearing special yellow T-shirts. Emblazoned across the front of each shirt were the words in Spanish that said, Thank You, Lord. The miners had, in fact, requested these words. On the back of the shirts was a Scripture from Psalm 95:4 (in Spanish) which read in translation, In His hands are the depths of the earth, the heights of the mountains are His also. These shirts were made for them by the Chilean Campus Crusade for Christ who had also sent them MP3players with the audio version of the Jesus film. All 33 of the miners came up saying that they wanted to testify to the Lord Jesus Christ that they had found God in that mine. Five or six were already believers before the mine accident. Their prayers and devotions were shared by the others until they could say, We were not 33 men there, but 34, because Jesus was there with us. Another part of the rescue story that I missed at the time is that before they brought up the first miner, they sent down a trained Medic into the rescue hole to help the men know how to use the rescue device. Isnt that a picture of what God has done for us? While we were in darkness, God sent Jesus on a rescue mission for us.
This is the Christmas message that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son into this world of darkness to bring us into the Light. With all of the attention on the baby in the manger not to mention Santa and all other stuff we sometimes focus on- dont forget that what it is all about is Gods rescue operation! Jesus has come to bring you and me out of whatever world of darkness and whatever it is that has trapped us into the world of Light and Love.
My Advent messages during the four Sundays before Christmas this year will be centered on the Angels that God sent to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds and Wise Men. I hope you will find the place where their stories cross with YOUR story, and you will find the rescue that perhaps you hadnt even dreamed could happen for you!
