You will find Raton, New Mexico, on the Mountain branch of the old Santa Fe Trail. Located at the southern base of the Raton Pass, it began as a ranch and forage station known as Willow Springs. In 1880 the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad located a repair depot here, causing a population boom. Raton's historic district reflects its railroad heritage and colorful past. Full of history as a cross-roads of the Old West, the region retains its natural beauty and rural quality of life. Raton is Spanish for “mouse”.
