There are two styles of cabinet construction framed and frameless. The same building materials can be applied to either style and offer many variations, designs and pricing options. Manufactured cabinetry is available as in stock, semi-custom made and custom cabinets made and sold in home improvement stores or special cabinetry shops.
Framed styling consists of a traditional box base with a face frame and numerous stiles, rails and methods of wood joinery to add support and strength to the overall structure. The face frames are visible on the front of the cupboards between the doors and drawers. The hardware that attaches doors to the face frame is also visible though concealed hardware is an option. Door overlaying is variable depending on preference or doors sit inside of the cupboard and are flush with the face frame.
European or frameless cabinetry is becoming more popular and considered to more visually appealing. This style involves a sturdier box constructed with thicker heavier materials and stronger side panels. This eliminates the need for stiles and rails as shelves and partitions provide the structure strength. Door and drawer fronts are the only elements seen as there is no face frame and attaching hardware is hidden within the kitchen cabinets themselves. Proper alignment is of greater importance as this aspect is noticed because spacing is 1/8 or less. Doors completely cover the frame or are inset. This type of construction is believed to be more cost effective as less labor is involved to assemble the structures.
Kitchen or bathroom furnishings use one of the two methods of construction. Many factors are responsible for cabinetry pricing. In stock materials are premade in popular sizes and styles and obtained the same day or within a few days of purchase and this is the most cost effective way of obtaining cabinetry. Semi-custom made cabinets offer more flexible options in relation to types of storage, design and style. Overall dimensions are basic but depth can be altered. Lazy Susans and pullouts can be added or modified. Choice of hardware and finish is another feature. Custom-made cabinetry is built according to specific consumer detail, but tends to be the most expensive option.
The type of wood used in construction also determines cabinetry cost. Thermofoil, laminate and melamine products are comprised of pressed wood fibers with a vinyl overlay. This material is durable as it resists stains and scratches. These products are manufactured to appear like their wood conterparts in design and style, but are the cheapest cupboards available. Hard woods like cherry and maple are the most expensive. Cabinet features like cabinet doors design and wood finish contribute to overall cost.
The more elaborate or intricate the door design and the greater number of steps required for the finishing process the more costly the completed project will be. A painted or stained finish is less expensive than painted or stained and glazed finishes. Doors that contain more wood to create a 3 dimensional design or inlaid glass to present an open appearance will be more costly than a flat door surface. Styles that include decorative mouldings, onlays, corbels, columns, fillers, blocks and feet enhance the overall design and give the impression of fine furniture but also add to construction fees.
Many homeowners choose to revamp their kitchens providing an updated look or to maximize space. An remodeled kitchen enhances resale value in addition to being aestheticly pleasing and functional. Cabinetry construction ranges from completely do-it-yourself projects to hiring designers, contractors and laborers to complete the task from start to finish. Style and design ideas are readily available whether visiting stores or viewing websites online.
