Announcing the Taos Pharmacy Prescription Discount Card: With the national average brand-name prescription price at $120, people often cannot afford their medications. Taos Pharmacy is offering a free discount prescription card to anyone who does not have other prescription coverage. Unlike other programs that only discount the cheapest generic drugs, the Taos Pharmacy Prescription Discount Card offers significant savings on all prescriptions, both brand-name and generic. Stop by for your Taos Pharmacy Prescription Discount Card today and lower your prescription costs immediately. See our recent weekly column for more information.
Vaccine program: Our pharmacist is now certified to prescribe and administer vaccines without a separate doctor's order. We can administer all vaccines except yellow fever, including flu and pneumonia. We have or can acquire most traveler's vaccines such as hepatitis A, typhoid, polio and tetanus/diphtheria. See our clinical services section for more information.
Smoking cessation: Taos Pharmacy announces an "RX for Change," a smoking cessation program funded by a New Mexico Pharmaceutical Care Foundation grant. Our pharmacists are now certified to provide smoking cessation counseling and products including prescription medications without a separate doctor's order. You may be eligible to receive smoking cessation counseling and products at no cost if you do not have insurance coverage. Visit our education section or call us for more information.
Top 10 health tips (please see our archive of weekly columns for additional health advice topics):

Stop smoking - if you smoke there isn't anything more important to your health.
Exercise regularly - at least 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week will greatly reduce your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses.
Eat fewer calories - instead of focusing on losing weight, learn to limit the amount of food you eat.
Drink plenty of water - especially in New Mexico's high, dry climate.
Know your family health history - this is a great source of information regarding your personal health risks.
Know your numbers - body mass index (BMI), lipid profile (TC, HDL, LDL, TRG), blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose (FBG) as all are used to determine health risks.
If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation only. Excessive alcohol use is associated not only with personal health risk but also with increased risk of domestic violence and injury from accidents.
Eat more plant-based foods - use plant oils (olive and canola oils) to cook with, eat more grains, and eat more fruits and vegetables (5 to 10 servings per day).
Relax daily - consciously relax for 15 to 30 minutes each day, focus on slowing your breathing and heart rate, relax each muscle group. Relaxation has been shown to lower blood pressure and counter stress related physical changes.
Keep your mind active and stay involved with people - especially as you get older. Lack of mental and social stimulation is associated with depression and a downward spiral in health.
