House Democrats avert leadership struggle
WASHINGTON (AP) - House Democrats averted a messy leadership struggle Friday night, clearing the way for Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer to become second in command of their new minority without a challenge from South Carolina Rep. James Clyburn. Under an arrangement worked out in private, officials said Clyburn would instead receive a new position, title unknown and duties undescribed, explicitly labeled the third-ranking post in leadership.
Obama seeks more market access, jobs for Americans
YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) - President Barack Obama appealed to Asian leaders Saturday for greater access to fast-growing markets, proclaiming "the United States is here to stay" and saying its prosperity is tied inextricably to the success of its Pacific trading partners. "America is leading again in Asia," Obama told a gathering of chief executives at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, stressing anew his goal of doubling U.S. exports over the next five years. "For America, this is a jobs strategy," the president said. "In this region, the United States sees a huge opportunity to increase our exports in some of the fastest-growing markets in the world."
After G-20 rancor, Pac Rim leaders push free trade
YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) - Leaders of the world's three biggest economies - the U.S., China and Japan - all pledged Saturday to boost free trade, apparently putting aside acrimony over currencies that has threatened to revive pressures for protectionism. The vows against backsliding toward retaliatory trade moves came at an annual summit of Pacific Rim leaders, just a day after a fractious summit of the Group of 20 major economies in South Korea.
