How can massage help me? Massage is a gentle, safe therapy that can relieve pain and, in combination with other appropriate health care measures, can help heal certain conditions and prevent their return. In many cases massage can reduce or even eliminate the need for medication or surgery. Massage in it's simplest form also relaxes and strengthens our tissues. By reducing stress, we feel better and are able to function at a more optimum level in every-day activities.
Q: I am under a lot of stress, will massage help?
A: Yes. Massage is one of the best known antidotes for stress.
Reducing stress gives you more energy, improves your outlook on life, and reduces your likelihood of injury and illness.
Massage can also relieve symptoms of conditions that are aggravated by anxiety such as allergies, nervous-twitches, asthma or insomnia.
Because it relieves stress, massage is also an excellent supportive therapy for people in psychological counseling or treatment for addiction.
Q: Will it help my pain?
A: Yes. Massage helps to reduce pain levels. Massage allows the muscles to relax and in so doing, the pain is reduced.
Through a modality known as trigger point release, certain points in the muscles are massaged and the muscle "lets go", relaxing the muscle back to its normal state.
Your massage therapist knows ways to minimize pain, and will work carefully within what feels right for you.
A wonderful side-effect as well - massaging the body also relaxes the mind and makes us feel more at-ease with our condition, which inturn, helps promote healing.
Q: Can massage help with muscle soreness?
Massage can relieve many types of muscle tightness, from a short-term muscle cramp to a habitually clenched jaw or tight shoulders.
Some massage techniques release tension directly by stretching and kneading your muscles and their connective tissue coverings (called fascia).
Other techniques work less directly, but quite powerfully, by stimulating your nervous system to allow your muscles to relax.
Q: Does massage help pain in the joints?
A: Yes. Besides releasing tight muscles that restrict joint movement, massage works directly on your joints to improve circulation, stimulate production of natural lubrication, and relieve pain from conditions such as osteoarthritis.
Q: Can massage help the tingling in my arms and legs?
A: Yes. Muscles can become so contracted that they press on nerves to the arms, hands and legs, causing pain or tingling. If this happens, a massage to release muscle spasms in the shoulder or hip brings relief.
Q: Can massage help with the effects of forced inactivity?
A: Yes. There are many reasons you may be forced to limit physical activity including injury, surgery, paralysis, being confined at home or work or even normal aging.
When this happens, massage can relieve your aches and pains and improve circulation to your skin and muscles.
Even when an immobilized area cannot be massaged directly, the relaxation and increased circulation from a general massage can give you relief.
Massage increases your circulation which in turn drains tissues of excess fluid caused by recent injury, surgery, or pregnancy.
Q: Will my insurance cover my massage treatments?
A: Sometimes, depending on your plan. Personal injury protection, primarily car insurance, may cover massage to help with recovery from an accident.
Also, with a prescription from your primary care provider, workers compensation plans also usually cover massage for on-the-job injuries.
Health care is changing rapidly, and some insurance plans are beginning to recognize the benefits of regular massage therapy.
You must call your local insurance agent or company to ask what is covered on your plan.
If your plan covers massage therapy, I will submit the necessary paperwork for payment.
Q: In general, how will a massage feel?
A: Massage on normal tissue is almost always a very pleasant experience - it feels great. Massage in a sensitive area of an injury or chronic pain usually can cause some discomfort. This discomfort however, noticeably dissipates in the first few minutes.
Good communication between client and therapist is really important. Always tell your massage therapist if you feel any discomfort so she or he can make adjustments.
Q: Is massage always appropriate?
A: No. There are some conditions for which massage is not appropriate. Always tell your massage therapist if you have a medical condition, even a minor one.
Some conditions require close communication between your massage therapist and your doctor or other health practitioner. In those cases I always recommend letting your primary health care practitioner know you are receiving massage.
I will be happy to provide regular progress reports to your doctor until treatments are no longer necessary.
Q: What else can I do to assist in my own healing process after a massage?
Your greatest benefit from massage could be learning ways to release tension or help heal injuries after your massage sessions.
I might share relaxing breathing techniques or gentle exercises with you to increase your flexibility and enable you to teach your muscles more efficient movements. Other common techniques you might learn are how to release tension by contracting and releasing muscles, pressing "trigger points", as well as using cold (ice) and heat as your friend.
Just knowing that you can do something to help decease your pain and increase your relaxation level gives most people an added sense of confidence and control over their lives whatever their condition.
Q. Will my insurance cover my massage treatments?
A. If you insurance plan covers massage therapy, the necessary paperwork will be submitted for payment.
Q. What else can I do to assist in my own healing process?
A. Always increase the amount of water intake, this will help the body to rid toxins that may have accumulated in the muscles and tissues.
When you come to your first session at HarmonyPath Inc., we will review your personal health history, review any referring practitioner's recommendations and the reason you came.
Together, we will then decide on a plan of action that will focus on your area of concern, along with other areas that may be related.
In determining the best approach, I may check your physiology for restricted or painful movement, gently feeling for tenderness, and looking at your posture.
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable. Whatever level you're at or whichever massage or body work modality you would like to try, you'll have someone to help you assess your specific needs and suggest an appropriate program for you to meet your wellness goals.
I provide 30 minute, 60 minute and 90 minute sessions. In some cases I recommend a "massage series" if there is need. A "series" helps to augment the healing process over time at the bodies own pace.
A series may be a 60 minute massage session once or twice a week, or even twice a month. Each massage in a series goes a bit deeper and builds on the work completed in the previous session. The appropriate frequency, duration and number of massage sessions for a series depends on each individual's unique issues, severity, how long you may have had a certain condition, as well as your overall health.
I've had pregnant women as well as chronic pain sufferers all benefit from series sessions.
