Helping New Mexicans Age with Dignity and Independence since 1977
Open Hands provides essential services to assist the frail elderly, the disabled or the economically disadvantaged to live with dignity and independence.
To enable people to continue living in their homes, or with family, for as long as possible.
Open Hands was founded in 1977 to provide volunteer home visiting, homemaker, and personal care services for the terminally ill and the elderly. Volunteers served 26 clients that first year.
As needs grew during the next several years, more programs were added including Adult Day Services, Community Outreach Services and the Retail Store. To accommodate an increasing number of clients, Open Hands launched a $3.9 million campaign in 1997 to construct a new facility and support expanded operations. Following a successful conclusion, we moved into our new state-of-the-art facility (pictured above) on Rodeo Park Drive East in 2001.
Today, Open Hands serves 12,000 clients and households per year, works with many other organizations to provide information and referrals, and remains true to its mission of assisting people to live with dignity and independence.
