Welcome to the website of The Disciplinary Board of New Mexico. The Disciplinary Board is an agency of the Supreme Court of New Mexico.

The Office of Disciplinary Counsel is the investigative body for the Disciplinary Board. The Office of Disciplinary Counsel looks into complaints about attorneys licensed to practice law in New Mexico to determine whether the attorneys have violated the Rules of Professional Conduct. The Rules of Professional Conduct are part of the New Mexico Statutes.

If you are having a fee dispute with your attorney, the State Bar of New Mexico offers a fee arbitration service under its Client Information and Assistance. If the parties to such a dispute will agree to submit the question to an arbiter and be bound by the arbiter's decision, the matter can be resolved quickly at no cost. The Office of Disciplinary Counsel does not investigate complaints against judges. If you have a complaint against a New Mexico state court justice or judge, please contact the New Mexico Judicial Standards Commission at (505) 222-9353 or go to New Mexico Judicial Standards Commission. If you have a complaint against a federal judge or federal magistrate, you may obtain information as to how to file a complaint at Rules for Judicial Conduct.
The Office of Disciplinary Counsel does not represent the individual who files a complaint (the "Complainant"), and a Complainant is not a party to a disciplinary proceeding. Likewise, the Office of Disciplinary Counsel has no authority to become involved in a Complainant's legal dispute with an attorney or to affect the outcome of any court matter. The Office of Disciplinary Counsel cannot give a Complainant legal advice. A Complainant should not wait for the resolution of his/her disciplinary complaint before taking any action for damages that he/she may seek against an attorney. A Complainant should seek the advice of private counsel in such matters.
The filing of a complaint with the Disciplinary Board costs nothing to the Complainant. The Disciplinary Board is funded through fees paid annually by lawyers as part of the State Bar dues assessed against attorneys licensed in this state. The Disciplinary Board is not supported by taxes or other public money.
